Dear Parents/Carers

Please find information below about all our upcoming events, assessments and activities and get in touch via the contact details at the bottom if you have any further questions.

School Times
School opens at 8.50am and closes at 3.10pm. All students are expected to be on the school site at 8.50am in readiness for registration.

Attendance
Over the next two weeks we will be running an attendance challenge for tutor groups. The cookie challenge will reward the tutor group with the highest attendance as a whole with a tray of cookies. One group in each year will be rewarded. The challenge will run from Monday 22nd January to Friday 26th January with winning tutor groups receiving their tray of cookies Monday 29th January.

All absences from school should be reported on the morning of each day of absence before 9.15am and provide a valid reason.

  1. Email –            RobertsT581@hwbcymru.net ( School Attendance Officer)
  2. Telephone –    01978 833010
  3. Free Text –     07908670242

Failure to report your child’s absence from school creates a safeguarding issue.

Uniform
We appreciate your support in maintaining our uniform standards. School uniform embodies our values and promotes our strong sense of cynefin. Please note the following items are not acceptable: leggings, converse footwear, denim or leather jackets, miniskirts, jeans and hoodies. Blazers are compulsory. Plain blue jumpers are optional but should always be worn with a school blazer. Please see the Uniform Policy on the school website for further clarification.

Assessments
Year 11 Food and Nutrition practical exams will take place Monday January 22nd, Wednesday January 23rd and Friday January 26th Pupils must be on time for school and make sure they know where they need to be. Pupils must remember to fetch all equipment needed for the examination. These are not mock exams, attendance is mandatory to pass the GCSE. Students are aware of this and revision has been provided in class.

Year 7 and 8 assessments begin this week. Revision materials will be provided. See the assessments timetable attached for more info.

Gair Cymraeg yr Wythnos / Welsh Word of the Week
To help promote the Welsh language in school we will be posting a ‘Gair Cymraeg yr Wythnos’ (Welsh Word of the Week) each week on the school X (Twitter) page. Each week a pair of our Tim Iaith (Langauge Leaders) will film themselves saying a word in Welsh.

Our first word is: Cymuned (Community).

Brilliant Books
Each week we recommend a ‘Brilliant Book’ for students. These books will always be aimed at young people and are available in the school Library. Our recommendation this week is ‘Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen.
Ade loves living at top of a tower block and he loves his life, but one day a building falls randomly near his home, then another one. The buildings keep falling and no one knows why. A heart wrenching science fiction story of survival, with themes of isolation, growing up and mental health.

Film Club
This Tuesday in Film Club we will be screening ‘Mean Girls’ (2004) 3.10pm-4.45pm. All students are welcome but please make sure parents know if you intend to stay behind after school.

Current Initiatives
We welcome donations of second-hand clean uniform items including shoes in good condition. If you have any items which your child has outgrown and are in good condition, please bring them to the main reception area.
