Excellence for all and excellence from all

5x60 Sport

The 5x60 Officer for Ysgol Y Grango is Liam Jones. Rob works for Wrexham Sports Development as part of the Active Young People Team.

The 5x60 scheme aims to increase opportunities for extra-curricular sport and physical activity sessions for secondary school children. The reason it is called ‘5x60’ is because the aim is for children to take part in 60 minutes of activity five times a week.

The current 5x60 timetable has a lot of variety, with some traditional and non-traditional sports and activities. The aim is to offer the pupils something slightly different than what they are used to in their PE lessons. Some sessions are changed each term to offer variety but other sessions stay the same as the pupils build up a relationship with the coach/ instructor and enjoy taking part in sessions all year round.

The majority of sessions are aimed at pupils in Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9) but there is also an opportunity for some pupils in Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11) & Sixth Form to help out with sessions as part of the 5x60 ‘Young Leaders’ programme.

By keeping those who attend regularly interested and also encouraging those who don’t currently attend sessions to do so, the aim is to try and work towards meeting the target set by Sport Wales of seeing 90% of children taking part in regular and frequent physical activity by 2020.
