Year Group Information

Our pastoral care program is at the heart of everything we do

At Ysgol Y Grango, our pastoral care program is not just an add-on; it is an integral part of our school’s ethos. We believe that by embracing the values of “We Are, We Care, We Share,” we can help our students grow into confident, compassionate, and well-rounded individuals ready to make a positive impact in the world.

We strive to create a supportive and nurturing environment where every student feels valued, understood, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Year 7

Head of Year – Miss Z Povey

In Year 7, we focus on helping students transition smoothly from primary to secondary school. We understand that this can be a significant change, and our priority is to ensure that every student feels welcome and supported. We provide them with a settling in period where they are able to slowly integrate themselves into the school and the day to day experience.

There is an emphasis on the school values of “We Are, We Care, We Share”. Peer Mentors (KS4 students) work alongside the Year 7 students to are able to identify familiar faces should they need advice or support with any issues. The key foundations of being Ready, Respectful and Safe are consistently applied to ensure that students work in the most effective way possible and feel supported during their time at Ysgol Y Grango.

Year 8

Head of Year – Mr N Thomas

In Year 8, our focus shifts towards helping students strengthen their friendships, develop a deeper sense of belonging, and build on the foundations laid in Year 7. We continue to focus on the key core values within the school and strive to ensure that the students continue to meet the standards set for them. They have the opportunity to develop skills across all subjects and engage in other aspects of school life, taking on leadership roles and developing the necessary life skills they will require in the future.

Year 9

Head of Year – Mrs K Taunt

Year 9 is a pivotal time for students as they begin to explore their individual identities and interests. The focus falls upon our students to start taking ownership of their own academic journey as they start to look ahead. Through the options process, students are able to develop their learning further and start to determine their next steps. We continue to build upon leadership opportunities through programmes such as Sports Leaders that continue to expand their skill set and support their future applications for college courses and apprenticeships.

Year 10

Head of Year – Mr C Cathrall

In Year 10, the focus shifts towards preparing students for their GCSE Examinations and life beyond school. They access the GCSE curricula for their core and option subjects. Students will sit some GCSE exams during this year and produce a significant share of their coursework that will count towards their final grades. Students will be assigned staff mentors with whom they will have a close working relationship in order to support them on this journey.

Year 11

Head of Year – Miss B Edwards

Year 11 is a critical year, and we will support students to achieve their potential. They will continue to work with mentors and tutors closely in order to evaluate their progress and understand the next steps in their academic journey. They will consider the next phase in their academic journey and plan what they need to do to achieve their aspirations. They are given a wide variety of opportunities to improve their academic studies, supported by a caring approach that builds resilience and determination.

At every stage of their journey, Ysgol Y Grango is committed to providing comprehensive pastoral care tailored to the unique needs of each year group and individual, ensuring our students are supported, empowered, and ready for the challenges ahead.
