Personal, Social, Health and Emotional

Learning objectives
All year groups follow the Jigsaw for Secondary PSE scheme, which has been fully mapped to meet all of the PSE learning objectives for the PSE framework for Wales. It has also been written to meet the RSE learning outcomes framework.
Learning objectives in lessons are categorised as PSHE objectives or Social and Emotional objectives.
Routine, trust and safe relationships
This core scheme of learning is supported by “one off” lessons and resources, delivered to coincide with awareness days, thematic issues, and areas of learning need identified by SHRN data, questionnaires etc.
The programme is enriched by lessons and activities delivered by outside agencies. PSE is scheduled weekly as a rolling timetable and delivered by form tutors which fosters an atmosphere of routine, trust and safe relationships.

Provision
In Year 7 and 8 learners receive one PSE lesson per fortnight (RADY/Mixed Ability) and follow the CFW.
Learners in Years 9, 10 and 11 receive PSE via extended assemblies throughout the year as part of the All-Wales School Police Liaison Program and other external agencies.
Year 7 & 8
One 1-hour lesson per fortnight – CFW Health & Well Being/PSHE Programme of Study.
Years 9, 10 & 11
Extended year group assemblies/tutor group presentations delivered by a range of external agencies.
Years 7 – 1
One 1-hour lesson weekly – JIGSAW Project, delivered in form groups by a form tutor.
Jigsaw Project
The Jigsaw Project is a mindful approach to health & well being which brings together PSHE, emotional literacy, social skills and mental health & resilience. The Jigsaw Project is designed as a whole school approach with all year groups working on the same theme at the same time.
The Jigsaw Project consists of six units of study (puzzles) each with five lessons (pieces) and an end of unit assessment.
- Puzzle 1 – Being me in my world
- Puzzle 2 – Celebrating difference
- Puzzle 3 – Dreams and goals
- Puzzle 4 – Healthy me
- Puzzle 5 – Relationships
- Puzzle 6 – Changing me
The Jigsaw approach is underpinned by mindfulness. Mindfulness practice enables pupils to observe their own thoughts and feelings, regulate them and make conscious decisions about their learning, behaviour and lives. It helps them to remain focused on the present moment, allaying and managing stress and anxiety.

Enrichment Opportunities
At Ysgol Y Grango, our PSE curriculum is designed to equip students with essential life skills, promote personal development, and ensure they are up to date with all the key information in an ever-changing world. To enhance this learning experience, we offer a variety of enrichment opportunities that engage students and encourage them to explore their interests and passions.
- Workshops and Guest Speakers
We regularly invite experts from various fields to conduct workshops and give talks on topics such as mental health, physical health, and career planning. These sessions provide students with valuable insights and real-world perspectives, helping them to navigate their future paths with confidence.
- Extracurricular Clubs
Our PSE program ties in and supports a range of extracurricular clubs focused on mental well-being, environmental awareness, and leadership development. We also link in with the pupil voice aspects of the school, giving students the opportunity to join groups such as the Pride club or Eco Club, where they can engage with like-minded peers and take active roles in promoting positive change.
- Field Trips and Residential Experiences
Throughout the school we organise educational trips and residential experiences that allow students to step outside the classroom and apply their PSE learning in real-world contexts. These experiences foster independence, resilience, and social skills, as students collaborate and face challenges together.
- Peer Mentoring and Leadership Programs
Older students have the opportunity to take on mentoring roles, supporting younger peers in their school journey. This not only enhances leadership skills but also strengthens the school community, creating a culture of support and collaboration.
